„Democratic Memories. Democratic Futures“: Umweltaktivismus als demokratische Praxis

Zum öffentlichen Auftakt am 8. Oktober ab 19Uhr im Leipziger Beyerhaus fragen wir – 40 Jahre nach Tschornobyl – nach der Rolle von Umweltbewegungen für die Demokratie.

Umweltbewegungen sind wichtiger Teil zivilgesellschaftlichen Handelns – doch Themen, Aktionsformen und gesellschaftliche Bedingungen verändern sich.
Zur Eröffnung des Internationalen Runden Tisches beleuchten Prof. Dr. Dr. Felix Ekardt (BUND) und Mascha Schädlich (Konzeptwerk Neue Ökonomie) Umweltaktivismus und Klimabewegungen aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven: von politischen und juristischen Fragen des Klimaschutzes bis zu neuen Formen sozialökologischen Engagements.

Was hat sich verändert, was verbindet die Generationen – und welche Rolle spielt ökologisches Engagement für eine demokratische Zivilgesellschaft? Die begleitende Performance belarusischer Künstler*innen »Die Stille dröhnt« erinnert an die Tschornobyl-Katastrophe vor 40 Jahren und ihre prägende Bedeutung für Umweltbewegungen.

From October 8 to 10, 2026, Leipzig will become an international hub for democracy and civil society. More than 70 representatives from Europe and around the world will discuss the following topics in roundtable discussions and panel discussions:

• Democratic Coexistence in Times of Global Crises
• Civil resistance and its role in social change (and its role in an open society)
• Interconnections Between Ecological, Political, and Social Transformations

"Die Revolutionale" is a project of the Peaceful Revolution Foundation aimed at strengthening civil society engagement in support of human rights, democracy, and social change—in Leipzig and internationally. The goal is to use the Peaceful Revolution of 1989 as the foundation of our values to connect actors from civil society, the cultural sector, and the field of democracy advocacy, and to raise the profile of international freedom and democracy movements. Under the motto “Democratic Memories. Democratic Futures,” the International Round Table—a conference on democracy and human rights—will take place for the fifth time in October 2026.
