On September 19, 2023, Azerbaijan initiated a significant military offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh after months of blockade. The entry of Azerbaijani security forces into the region and the rapid fall of Artsakh’s forces resulted in a mass exodus of the Armenian population and the prospective dissolution of the Republic of Artsakh. Join us for a crucial panel discussion as we dissect the ongoing developments in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh post these events. The panel centers the question: “What lies ahead for the territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia?” We’ll also explore the nuanced roles of international players like Russia, Turkey, and the EU.
Our expert panelists will provide insights into the legalities of recent developments and offer a comprehensive understanding of the current human rights situation in the region. We’ll look at the impact of recent events on social conditions, considering their impact on communities and assessing potential opportunities for reconstruction in the region. This panel will provide an opportunity to gain an understanding of the multi-faceted dimensions of the post-conflict landscape in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

- Anna Melikyan (Legal Expert, NGO “Protection of Rights Without Borders”)
Anna holds Law Degree from the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University, and LL.M. from the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. She joined the NGO “Protection of Rights Without Borders” in 2020 as a Project Coordinator after working in field of human rights for several international organizations. - Siranush Sargsyan (journalist)
Siranush is a Stepanakert-based freelance journalist covering human rights, politics, conflict and post-conflict environments. She regularly publishes in regional and international outlets, including Newsweek, the Armenian Weekly and IWPR. - Moderator: Mariam Nazaryan
Mariam repeatedly explores the relationship between political and private identity and solidarity as an aesthetic means in her academic and artistic work. Her thematic focus is the post-Soviet subject in war. As an author and critic, she has written articles for cultural blogs and theatre festivals and is active in socio-cultural contexts.
The discussion will be in English and will be conducted on Zoom.

Hintergrund des REVOLUTIONALE Talk: Blick auf Armenien und Bergkarabach:
Am 19. September 2023 startete Aserbaidschan nach monatelanger Blockade eine bedeutende Militäroffensive in Berg-Karabach. Der Einmarsch aserbaidschanischer Sicherheitskräfte in die Region und der schnelle Fall der Streitkräfte von Artsakh führten zu einer Massenflucht der armenischen Bevölkerung und der voraussichtlichen Auflösung der Republik Artsakh. In der wichtigen Podiumsdiskussion werden die aktuellen Entwicklungen in Armenien und Berg-Karabach nach diesen Ereignissen analysiert.
Im Mittelpunkt der Podiumsdiskussion steht die Frage: “Wie geht es weiter mit der territorialen Integrität der Republik Armenien?” Auch die Rolle internationaler Akteure wie Russland, der Türkei und der EU werden in den Blick genommen.
Unsere Expert*innen werden Einblicke in die rechtlichen Feinheiten der jüngsten Entwicklungen geben und ein umfassendes Verständnis der aktuellen Menschenrechtslage in der Region vermitteln. Wir werden uns mit den Auswirkungen der jüngsten Ereignisse auf die sozialen Verhältnisse befassen, ihre Auswirkungen auf die Gemeinschaften betrachten und mögliche Chancen für den Wiederaufbau in der Region bewerten.
Diese Podiumsdiskussion bietet die Gelegenheit, die vielfältigen Dimensionen der Postkonfliktsituation in Armenien und Berg-Karabach zu erfassen.
Der Talk findet im Rahmen unserer Veranstaltungsreihe CONFLICT:ED, in Kooperation mit der Volkshochschule Leipzig. Gefördert vom Bundesministerium für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend im Bundesprogramm “Demokratie leben!” sowie der Stadt Leipzig und dem Freistaat Sachsen.
